Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CatNap

How does CatNap recognize my cat?
CatNap uses AI-powered image recognition to learn your specific cat's appearance. When you create a CatKey, you upload 3+ photos of your cat from different angles. The AI creates a unique 'fingerprint' of your cat's features. When you scan to unlock, it compares the live camera feed against this fingerprint to verify it's really your cat.
Can I trick it with a photo of my cat?
CatNap is designed to detect static images and reject them. While no system is perfect, the AI looks for movement, depth, and other signs of a live cat. Most photo tricks don't work. The point isn't to make it impossible to bypass—it's to add enough friction that you consciously choose to seek out your cat instead of mindlessly scrolling.
What if I don't have a cat?
CatNap is specifically designed for cat owners. The whole concept relies on having a cat to scan. If you don't have a cat, check out alternatives like Brick (NFC tag), Touch Grass (go outside), or Opal (scheduled blocking). Or... maybe it's time to adopt a cat?
How much does CatNap cost?
CatNap is free to use with core features. Premium unlocks unlimited CatKeys (cats), advanced blocking options, and removes ads. Premium is $4.99/month or $29.99/year. The CatKey Collar ($29) includes lifetime premium access.
What is the CatKey Collar?
The CatKey Collar is an NFC-enabled collar tag that unlocks your apps with a tap instead of a camera scan. Just hold your phone near your cat's collar to unlock. It also includes lost pet mode (QR code links to your contact info) and lifetime premium CatNap access. Pre-order for $29 with shipping Q1 2026.
Can I register multiple cats?
Yes! Each cat becomes its own 'CatKey.' Free users can register 1 cat. Premium users can register unlimited cats. Each cat's scan history is tracked separately, so you can see which cat unlocks your phone most often.
What apps can I block?
CatNap uses Apple's Screen Time API, so you can block any app that Screen Time supports. Common choices include TikTok, Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, YouTube, and games. You can block individual apps or entire categories.
Can I set scheduled blocking?
Yes! You can set apps to be blocked during specific hours (e.g., 9am-5pm for work) or use on-demand blocking when you need to focus. Scheduled blocks are great for establishing routine; on-demand blocks are great for study sessions.
What are Leaderboards and Contracts?
Leaderboards rank users by 'guard time'—the cumulative time your cats have blocked your apps. Add friends to compete weekly. Contracts let you set specific goals (e.g., 'under 2 hours social media/day') and invite friends as witnesses. If you break your contract, they get notified.
Does CatNap work on Android?
Currently, CatNap is iOS only. We're exploring Android support but haven't committed to a timeline. Android's permissions model is different, and we want to ensure the same quality experience before launching.
